Storm Funding Success!

Newton Storm ARLFC have just received notification from Awards for All that our £9,000 grant application has been successful. The funding will pay for the delivery of coaching sessions for Y1-Y6 children in all 11 primary schools where we have an official school/club link. Within the next 12 months, over 500 children will be taught rugby league skills by Newton Storm coaches, who in the past have needed to take time off from work to undertake schools coaching a voluntary basis.

Coaching sessions can start in September 2008 throughout the next school year and the funding also includes for a summer rugby festival in June 2009.

A lot of hard work went into the application by u11's Coach Malc Hankey, with supporting info supplied by Treasurer Ken Tinkley and sponsored by Steve Sexton (St Helens RLFC Development Officer) who kindly acted as a reference for the club.

With the great news surrounding new kit sponsorship and a record number of new players joining our junior teams, the future looks incredibly bright for Newton Storm ARLFC.

u10's London Tour

Newton Storm ARLFC u10’s have just completed a very successful tour, playing three matches against under 11s teams from London and the Midlands.

On Saturday 5th July 2008, Storm players were delighted to be welcomed to London by Harlequins coach Brian McDermott who kindly spent the day with the team, watching both games against Elmbridge Eagles and Whitton Warriors. Brian even took the time to give the players a rousing half time team talk during their second match, which they really responded to.

The team were then invited to the Twickenham Stoop to watch the Harlequins v St Helens game on Saturday evening and were surprised to have the opportunity to meet Saints coach Daniel Anderson before the game! On Sunday 6th July, Storm travelled 120 miles north to face Northampton Knights u11s team in another fantastic game and a great advert for junior rugby league.

Storm coach Malc Hankey said: “The players and parents have worked extremely hard for the last few months undertaking numerous fundraising activities to pay for the tour in full. Everyone had a fantastic time, some great experiences, and I would like to thank the individuals and local businesses who supported the team over the course of the season.”

The Storm under 10s players would also like to thank Malc and Karen Hankey for all their hard work and organisation, which made the tour possible.

u10's Sponsored Walk

Newton Storm ARLFC under 10s team completed a sponsored walk last Friday in order to raise money for their upcoming tour to London in July.

The players and parents walked more than five miles from their home at Newton Sports Club, Newton-le-Willows, to the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington, where they arrived just in time for kick off for the Warrington Wolves v St Helens game.

The fundraising event was made even more special as the walkers were joined by Steve Prescott and his son Taylor – who both managed to complete the distance, with Steve still recovering from his successful London Marathon less than two week earlier.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the walk, all the people who sponsored one of the players and a special thank you to Steve and Taylor for accompanying us on the day. As we all know, Steve is extremely busy with his own fundraising activities and it was greatly appreciated that he takes a few hours out of his schedule to do something like this for Newton Storm.”

It was also a bit of a shock for some of the players when they bumped into Jon Wilkin en route, who was waiting for a lift in Winwick. He was adamant that Saints hadn’t made him get the bus to the game!

Newton Storm finally has a place to call home....and that's official!!

Many thanks to all Storm members who have supported Fund a Field events. We now have somewhere to call our home and somewhere to spend the money that we have raised.

We look forward to working with all sections at the club, thank them for their support and here's to making Newton-le-Willows Sports Club the best sporting facility in the area.

Newton Storm'ed Perpignan!

Newton Storm u8’s travelled to Perpignan over the Easter break to play a curtain raiser in the Stade Aime Giral both before and at half time in the Les Catalans v St Helens super league game.

11 players from the Rams plus 5 from the Lightning team were merged for the trip and the 16 strong squad played two 8-a-side games against their counterparts from St Esteve and XIII Catalans. Whilst the French sides played slightly different rules than in the British game, Storm adapted quickly and both teams emerged victorious beating XIII Catalan 16-8 and St Esteve 8-4. Try scorers in all the matches were Robert Fairclough (4), Joshua Hankey (2), Mathew Knowelden, Christopher Wynn, Brad Causer and Daniel Lynch.

The trip saw a total of 50 people from the Storm club, made up of players, parents, brothers and sisters, travel to France for the mini-tour, and everyone agreed it was an experience to savour particularly for the players, who got the opportunity to meet and have photos taken with the Catalan and St Helens players before the game. Mike Bennett, who is a great supporter of Newton Storm was there to meet the lads on the pitch, along with the likes of Paul Sculthorpe, Jamie Lyon, Sean Long and Kieron Cunningham. Mike wished them all the best of luck and said afterwards that all the Saints players and in particular Saints coach Daniel Anderson were delighted that the Storm youngsters had made the trip to play in support of their team.

Newton Storm would like to thank David Foti and Abby from Catalan Sport Tours who made the trip so special for the players, and in particular to David and Paul at CST for sponsoring a kit for the trip, that will also be worn by the Rams team from September 2006 when the new season starts.
